These under cabinet lights add so much functionality and charm to our basement and I didn’t even need an electrician! These lights get plugged directly into an outlet, get hooked up through your home’s wifi and can be controlled by a remote switch and / or a smart phone.
Here’s what I bought:

💡Ikea Mittled kitchen strip lighting in 18”. I bought 8 of these - two for the shelves on the left, three for the shelves on the right, two for above the desk, and one for under the desk
💡 Ikea Tradfri shortcut button - one for the tv shelves lighting, and one for the desk area lighting
💡 Ikea Dirigera. This is the hub you need to connect to your wifi to smartify your lights! It can be controlled by the Tradfri shortcuts and an app on your phone
💡 Ikea Tradfri driver for wireless control. I have two of these - one for the tv shelves area, and one for the desk area lighting.
💡 Ikea Vagdal connection cord - these will connect your Mittled strips to your Tradfri driver. I bought 7 of these
💡 Ikea Ansluta - this will connect your Tradfri driver to an outlet to get power to your lights. I bought two of these - one for shelves, one for desk area.
The Mittled strips can be attached together so you can make longer strips of lights and you only need one Vagdal per grouping of lights.
There are clips you screw into the surface where you’re attaching your lights so they won’t fall.
💵 Total cost for the full lighting system: $378 Canadian
And best of all, you can do it all yourself and don’t need an electrician because you’re essentially just plugging them in!
Would you do this? It’s probably my favourite feature of the basement!
